Symbol Millennium The Falkirk Wheel Symbol Millennium The Falkirk Wheel Symbol of the Millennium: The Falkirk Wheel As the Falkirk Wheel approaches its10th anniversary, its owners couldnt be more delighted in how the one-of-a-kind boat lift has transformed Scotlands once-forgotten and neglected canal system into a thriving recreational and tourist attraction. The 35-m-high, 1,500-tonne structure, internationally recognized as an engineering marvel, reconnects the Forth Clyde Canal and the Union Canal, a vertical drop of 18 m, and provides water transport between Edinburgh and Glasgow. Synchronous gears placed within the wheel ensure that the gondolas stay in the horizontal plane during lifting. Conceived in the 1990s as part of the United Kingdoms Millennium Project, its owners, British Waterways Scotland, were seeking a novel, landmark design to take an Industrial Revolution-era project into the new century. The two canals had been connected through a series of 11 locks that were taken out of service in the 1930s when overland transport by road and rail supplanted the canal system. The canals were closed altogether in the 1960s. The Falkirk Wheel, a rotating lift operating through what BWS Business Development Manager Richard Millar calls a simple and elegant design, move two gondolas on opposite arms from one level to the other. Each gondola, or caisson, contains at least 250,000L of water and can carry up to eight boats at a time. Locks and Lifts To reach the wheel, boats moving through the Union Canal must still negotiate two locks, sail through a tunnel excavated beneath the Roman-era Antonine Wall, and proceed through a stretch of reinforced-concrete aqueduct . All are part of the overall 78-million Millennium Project. Still, there is a height difference of 11 ft between the wheel and the main channel of the Union Canal; the aqueduct could not be positioned higher because of its location to the Antonine Wall, which marks the northernmost boundary of Romes empire in Brittania. The lift then lowers one gondola to a loading basin and entry to the Forth Clyde Canal, and raises the other to the aqueduct and the Union Canal. Design is meant to resemble a Celtic cross. The wheel actually consists of two sets of opposing arms designed to resemble a double-headed Celtic axe. Designed by architect RMJM, they extend 15 m from the 3.5-m-diameter central axle and are placed 25 m apart. Each is fitted between the arms with a diametrically opposed water-filled caisson, or gondola, mounted on bearings riding on a circular rail. When one caisson is lowered, its opposite rises (see video of the Falkirk Wheel). Simplicity The weight in each of the gondolas remains the same, no matter how many boats are being lifted or lowered. The mechanics follow the Archimedes principle of displacement: the mass of the vessels moving into the gondola will displace an exactly proportional volume of water. This keeps the wheel balanced, allowing both gondolas to rotate 180 degrees in just five and one-half minutes. The efficiency of the design allows it rotate using very little power, just 22.5 kW to power the electric motors. Aqueduct for the Union Canal leads to the upper portion of the Falkirk Wheel. MG Bennett Associates, Rotherham, UK, known now as Bennett Atkins and a part of Atkins Global, designed the mechanical and electrical systems for the project, working with structural engineer Tony Gee and Partners under a contract with Butterley Engineering. Butterley was awarded the contract to design and construct the wheel from Bachy/Solentanche and Morrison Construction Joint Venture, which won the overall contract to design and build the new canal section, tunnel, and aqueduct as well as the wheel and receiving basin. The existing design was refined from one that envisioned four gondolas with an interlocking gear system. The interesting thing about the Falkirk Wheel is it is an integration of different areas of engineering, says Nicholas Cooper, who led the work for Bennett and now is engineering director for Atkins energy business. It is a machine held together by a structure. Engineering Integration To make it work, Bennett drew on its experience in tunneling and undersea engineering to design a drive system based on those of tunnel-boring machines as well as air-lock doors to provide seals at each end of the gondolas and the canal gates. Hydraulic rams are used to open and close the gates, release the seals and stabilize the gondolas. As the gondolas contain no power units, Bennett drew on its subsea pipeline experience to design a hydraulic connection to the ram using a hot stab, an external link that extends from the structure into a port in the gondola where it connects the hydraulic circuit. A pair of 4-m-diameter, three-row slewing bearings are incorporated into the drive system. Located at the ends of the axle, the outer rings of the bearings are bolted to the fixed support structure and the inner rings are bolted to the tubular axle. The inside diameter of the inner ring has gear teeth that mesh with a gearbox within the axle. Finally, to ensure the gondolas remain stable and in the horizontal plane during rotation, the designers used a series of synchronous gears cut with a shallow involute angle commonly found in old clocks. The concept allows the gears to accept structural deflection as the gondolas move. And they move enough to handle 130,000 to 150,000 people traveling the canals annually, says Millar. The wheel takes 15 minutes to move boats from one level to the next, compared to the half-day traverse of the old 11-step lock system. We were looking for something to grab the peoples imagination, says Millar. We were looking for something that would take us to the 21st Century. A recent inspection showed the structure is aging gracefully as it enters its second decade of operation. With its 125-year design life and robust popularity, the Falkirk Wheel is fulfilling its owners desire. Most CMS can be used alone  or in conjunction (i.e., integrated) with other applications. They can be set up directly on a network, the Internet, or even locally on your own computer. The most widespread use of CMS today involves the quick creation of powerful websites that do not require a high level of programming knowledge to set up, customize, and maintain. CMS can be broken into two main types: Proprietary CMS and Open Source CMS. Proprietary CMS Many companies sell licenses to use their own proprietary CMS. Proprietary generally means someone owns the rights to the CMS application and you need permission, or a license, to use it. But even if you have a license, in most cases, license holders may still be prohibited from duplicating the CMS. However, you need to know where the CMS will operate properly because many types of proprietary systems only work if the site you build with them is hosted by the CMS owner. For example, most online build it yourself website services use some form of proprietary CMS. If you build a website live through their tools the site will only work as long as you keep it with that companys CMS. If you try to move your domain somewhere else, the website you created may no longer work or may be converted to another format. Two of the biggest downsides to using a proprietary system include the cost of licenses and being limited as to where you can host your website and because many web host companies do not support proprietary CMS. This lack ofportability is the major reason most small business owners choose to use Open Source CMS. Open Source CMS The most popular Open Source CMS run on PHP (a scripting language well-suit for web development that can be embedded into HTML). These include WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal- the White House website is a Drupal site. Open source (OS) programs can be used by anyone for any purpose and do not require a license. You may also customize OS CMS without special permission. A few of the significant benefits of using an OS CMS include: There are cheaper because there are no license fees or upgrade fees.There are no contracts to sign and no long-term commitments one has to make.  Anyone can develop OS applications- there are already countless free modules, plugins, and complimentary tools so you dont need to hire a developer.  There are hundreds of thousands of free templates (otherwise called themes) available for OS CMS.  Search engines love OS CMS and WordPress, in particular, which is very simple to optimize for search engines using simple plug-in tools. Start by considering one of the three most popular Open Source applications: WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal- and play with them in that order. Companies that use WordPress include Ford, People Magazine, Sony, CNN, eBay, and Wired. WordPress.  Ideal for personal websites, blogs, small businesses, and those with few technical skills and no desire to learn programming skills, WordPress is the best place to start. It has the most available free themes (i.e., templates) and plugins available. Originally developed as a blogging tool, it is now used commonly to create complicated websites.  Joomla.  Olympus, Porsche, Sprint, and Vodafone are just a few of the major corporations that use Joomla. Joomla takes a little bit more time to set up than WordPress  but is more powerful and still easier than the mighty Drupal. It also works for blogs. Instrument Departure Procedures for Pilots Instrument Departure Procedures for Pilots Departure procedures are instrument flight procedures created to manage and protect departing traffic from obstacles and terrain. Instrument departure procedures come in two types: Obstacle Departure Procedures (ODPs) and Standard Instrument Departures (SIDs). ODPs provide obstruction clearance for pilots when departing on an instrument flight plan, and SIDs are meant to coordinate the transition from the terminal environment to the en route phase of flight in an efficient manner while ensuring obstacle and terrain clearance.   Every airport with an approach procedure must be evaluated to determine if an obstacle departure procedure is necessary. To evaluate, the FAA uses a set of standards that are based on “the pilot crossing the departure end of the runway (DER) at least 35 feet above the DER elevation, climbing to 400 feet above the DER elevation before making the initial turn, and maintaining a minimum climb gradient of 200 feet per nautical mile (FPNM).” Obstacle Departure Procedures ODPs are meant to assist IFR pilots during the climb from the  runway to the assigned or published en route altitude while avoiding obstacles and terrain. ODPs are commonly expressed in text, but occasionally in graphic form.  In the familiar Department of Transportation charts, the ODPs are found in the U.S. Terminal Procedures, known in the vernacular as the “approach plates.”  Textual ODPs are found in Section C (IFR Take-off Minimums and Departure Procedures) of the Terminal Procedures and the charted Obstacle DPs will be found following the approach charts for the specific airport.  Obstacle departure procedures aren’t assigned by ATC. Instead, it’s up to the pilot to seek them out and fly them as necessary. Unless included in the IFR clearance, compliance with an ODP is not mandatory, but it is wise.   Standard Instrument Departures Standard Instrument Departures (SIDs) are assigned by ATC and are found at busy airports. SIDs help ease the transition from the terminal airport environment to the en route phase of the flight, and compliance helps ATC manage the traffic flow. SIDs are designed with obstacle clearance in mind, as well as noise abatement, but are primarily used to reduce workload and radio chatter between pilots and controllers by managing the traffic flow in an efficient way. They are charted graphically and can be found alongside approach plates in the terminal procedures book. SIDs often include transition routes, which make the connection from the departure to an en route airway or course seamless. In a radar environment, radar SIDs are common, wherein controllers provide radar vectors to an en route fix.  They usually include an initial course specific to the departure runway and a second phase, a transition to a fix that begins the route of flight.  These SIDs usually include the departure frequency for the various directions of departure.   Standard instrument departures often have mandatory climb gradients and navigational capabilities. Pilots should be aware of their aircraft climb performance and navigational capabilities (or lack thereof) before accepting a SID from air traffic control.   RNAV Departures Area navigation (RNAV) departures are becoming more common as the use of GPS and ADS-B is becoming more widespread. RNAV routes will allow a properly equipped RNAV airplane to fly a more efficient course, since these aircraft will not necessarily need to rely on traditional means of navigating, such as VORs. The course of an RNAV departure can be customized to follow a curved course to avoid airspace, population areas for noise avoidance, or other airports.  RNAV departures are currently being developed as part of the FAA’s National Airspace Redesign project and should allow for more efficient air transportation, as pilots will more often be able to fly direct routes.

Here’s how:One of the things I was most surprised by when I got into the jobs business over a decade ago was the prevalence and practice of age discrimination in hiring right here in the USA.Oh, sure… we’re not like some overseas markets where job ads explicitly demand youth, or a particular gender, or beauty(!), in the applicant, but there it is…The blank look on your interviewer’s face when you talk about growing up in the 60s or 70s. The skepticism with which your Snapchat skills are regarded. The cultural references that pass silently like two Teslas in the night…Well, at least the younger generation seems to giggle at your references to “Gunga-galunga”.Most of the time.All of it adds up to a pernicious undercutting of your ability to get hired and get ahead. We have to admit the ugly truth that age discrimination exists - there’s no doubt about it.And t here’s no silver bullet for those facing it. If you’re in the job market and over the age of 52, you will almost certainly face stereotypes and negative attitudes regarding your desirability because of your age. And in some cities, in some markets, that negative environment impacts candidates as young as 40 years of age.While there’s nothing you can do to stop it, I have, over the years, observed which candidates and applicants have succeeded despite their age and which have failed because of it.If I had to summarize, I’d say it appears to me that age discrimination is mindset discrimination first and foremost. And you’ll need to review how you are presenting your mindset - your attitude - to your future employer.Every hiring manager is asking herself, every HR person is asking himself, these questions about you and every other candidate they’re interviewing…Will this candidate: â€" Be able to excel in this role? â€" Be able to learn and adjust as the role evolves? â€" Be able to master the tools and technologies involved today and tomorrow? â€" Get along well with others on the team? â€" Take direction and feedback?And it’s important for you to realize that youth is the symptom, not the cause, of age discrimination.What I mean by that is that hiring managers are hiring for open-mindedness, flexibility, and a sociability with others. On average, there’s a perception on the part of hiring managers, whether right or wrong, that those attributes are more frequently found in the young, as opposed to the experienced.And it’s worthwhile to review why these attributes have so much value in the business world today.As the world changes, businesses change even more rapidly. Companies sometimes need to jump on new trends before they pan out, or hedge their bets, or make sure they’re well-prepared for most contingencies. And that means there’s always plenty of “new” to keep up with.So a workforce that is flexible, open-minded and interested in learning is far better than a workforce that is determined to keep doing it the old way.“The old way works fine” mi ght be OK for you around the home, but in business, it has proven to be an enormous destroyer of value. Take a look at the hard times that old famous companies have fallen upon. Heck, even some of the newer tech companies that were darlings within the last decade have had difficulties mastering new environments.So expecting your future employer to be pleased with an “old ways are tried and true” mindset won’t serve you well in your job search.So it is not necessarily youth itself that companies are hiring for, rather, it is those attributes that have proven effective in today’s business environment.The cause of age discrimination is the perception around older professionals’ adaptability, curiosity, and team spirit; youth is merely a symptom.Since you can’t change your age, your goal is to address the underlying root causes of age discrimination - your goal is not to appear or act age-inappropriate - it is to present yourself, effectively, as a constructive, resourcefu l, “coachable”, team player.When confronting misperceptions in your job search, it is always better to “show” than to “tell”:â€" Describe situations in which you adapted new technologies to the problem at hand. It is helpful if these examples aren’t from the seventies, but rather represent transitions that your interviewer herself went through.â€" Recount how you were able to help younger (and older) staffers get to a solution that was stumping all. Detail the challenges you faced and what tactics you used to overcome them.â€" Relate your experiences with receiving and using feedback constructively. Discuss how you used the situation to update your behavior and outlook. Share the process you went through to find where you could perform better and the steps you took to achieve an improvement. Ideally, quantify that improvement.â€" Illustrate with specific stories your interest in, and passion for, the work that you do. Why does it drive you? What excites you about your work? Your younger competition does this out of habit - because they can’t talk about decades of success in the business - so you need to make sure you put yourself on a fair footing.As you can see, the important thing is that rather than telling the hiring manager that you’re open-minded, curious, flexible, adaptable to new circumstances, and sociable enough for the role, show him that you are.And a final word to remake the point about youth being a symptom and not a cause of age discrimination.On occasion, one finds older candidates that mistake having an open mindset withmimicking a twenty-year-old’s mindset.There is a difference.Arriving at a job interview replete with the names of the latest bands, dropping age-inappropriate lingo into your answers, and wearing clothes that reveal too much about your desperation by trying too hard, all have the opposite effect of what you’d hope for.Interactions like these reconfirm your interviewer’s fears that you’ll be obtuse, unsavvy, and a management challenge on the job.No, your best tactics are to communicate, verbally and nonverbally, that you are adept at keeping up with the times, and, even more importantly, interested in doing so.
